How is our dialect faring in the globalized age? When the "railroad age" began 160 years ago, German-speaking Switzerland feared that its dialect would be overrun by High German. A language archive was founded and millions of dialect words began to be collected. But the Swiss dialect has persisted. Today, dialect rap is flourishing, books are written in dialect as a matter of course, yodel lyrics are liberated from patriarchal language and on the country's stages, artists are cutting razor-sharp criticism into a landscape that has traditionally always been divided into "Böle" and "Zwebele". In search of the forgotten Bernese-German word "omegäng", we meet dialect artists in cellars and on alpine pastures, in language schools and on farms, who deal with their dialect in an idiosyncratic way. Omegäng is a linguistic road movie through the diversity of Swiss-German dialects through the ages.
